- Heads of the department
The head of the department holds the executive role and responsibility for the everyday operations of the department. The responsibilities and authority of the head of the department are regulated by the Faculty of Science’s delegation rules. According to the delegation rules, the head of the department shall manage and develop the department and is responsible for the department's resources. - Administration
If you have administrative questions, who shall you turn to? To make it easier for you, we have listed our administrative personnel according to their tasks and which divisions they work for. We use the telecommute agreement for technical and administrative positions within the university. It means that people belonging to the agreement will telecommute a maximum of two days a week. We will all be at the department on Thursdays. You can always reach us by Teams, phone, or email. - Boards, groups and committees
The Biology Department Board and the head of the department are assisted by several different preparatory working groups and committees. Our delegation of authority controls who is responsible and who is allowed to make decisions. - Facility, IT and Museum personnel
Health and safety representatives
Your health and safety representative can offer you advice, support and guidance on issues regarding your work environment. Remember that the health and safety representative is not responsible for your work environment – your manager is!

Boards, groups and committees
The Board is the decision-making body at the Department of Biology. Board members are democratically elected. The Board includes 8 members of teaching staff, 3 doctoral or other students, and 3 other staff members. The head of the department is the chair. The administrative manager and the director of studies are co-opted to the Board. The term of office is three years, except for student representatives who only serve one year.
The Board is responsible for policy, budget and strategic matters as well as overall monitoring of the department activities. More information on the Board’s authority and duties can be found in the Faculty of Science delegation rules and the Lund University rules and regulations.

The Department of Biology infrastructure group (BIG) is responsible for coordinating and developing the department’s infrastructure. The group advises the head of the department and the Biology Department Board and does not make binding decisions.
Here infrastructure means resources in the form of instruments and premises used for specific research purposes, often by several research groups, that require special resources such as staff and/or operating funds to be used efficiently and reliably. This includes what is used by the first-cycle courses and study programmes.
BIG’s remit does not include the biology library (which has its reference group), IT/computer/web helpdesk and the biological museums.
The applications annually submitted to the Faculty of Science’s infrastructure group are referred for consultation to BIG, which then delivers a comprehensive statement proposal from the department. On behalf of the faculty, BIG also keeps an inventory of heavy equipment.

The BDR works with anything involving doctoral students. Briefly, BDR provides a link between doctoral students and the different boards. BDR also discusses raised problems encountered by doctoral students and conveys important information to all doctoral students. Among other things, they appoint doctoral student representatives for other groups and committees and arrange guest lectures. The BDR also organises department seminars where doctoral students are allowed to meet across subject boundaries and present their research to each other. Most importantly, any doctoral student in the Department of Biology is welcome to participate in BDR at any time!
The BDR has created a guide for new doctoral students (pdf, 569 kB, new tab). Here you will find tips and advice on most things involving life in Sweden, at Lund University and the Department of Biology.

The Department of Biology combats all types of discrimination. If you feel that you are being discriminated against, contact one of the staff members or organisations under ‘Contact’, or one of the members of the group for gender equality and equal opportunities.
The Gender equality and equal opportunities group’s task is to draw attention to the problems that may exist in a workplace for those who are perceived as a minority. These are often problems not explicitly expressed by staff members but rather based on a cultural climate in society at large. It might entail indirectly having fewer opportunities to develop, change jobs, advance in their careers, etc., due to belonging to a certain group. Dividing people into groups instead of focusing on the individual is one of the main problems that we are trying to highlight.
Social norms of how various groups are, what jobs they are fit for, and who should naturally be in power, create indirect problems concerning employment and careers, for example. Chances are high that someone who fits the “mould” for that particular job or task is deemed more suitable and subsequently appointed, even though everyone, in principle, has equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender, ethnicity, age and/or sexuality. A system of discrimination may exist even though no one means any harm.
The group works to create a more inclusive workplace and raise awareness about any existing problems. We want to ensure that management sends a clear message about discrimination, and shows their staff that it is a priority. In this capacity, we promote discussions about gender equality and equal opportunities, compile information about the situation at the workplace, distribute books and articles about gender equality in one way or another, organise seminars and workshops, and offer help and support to anyone who is experiencing problems.

Health, environment and safety committee – working group (HMS-AU)
The HMS-AU is a link between the HMS committee and the activities at the Department of Biology. The working group ensures that work environment efforts are implemented by, among other things, making sure that the lab managers and heads of units are aware of what procedures and regulations need to be in place. The HMS-AU also ensures that the instructions and observations from the HMS committee are attended to and that statutory lists and registries are established and maintained.

Thursday seminars
We organise departmental seminars every Thursday at 13.15 in the Blue Hall in the Ecology building, on-site or via Zoom. The seminar group selects and hosts seminar speakers. Speakers at the seminars are usually external scientists who are leading figures in scientific areas relevant to researchers in the department. We serve fika (coffee) after each seminar to provide you with a meeting point for informal exchange.

Scientific and social activities (SACT)
We are working to integrate staff through scientific activities for all. Activities include seminars, bird watching, museum tours, mushroom picking excursions and such. Seminars are usually held on Thursdays, starting at 13:15 in the Blue Hall in the Ecology building. Excursions may take place at other times. Have a look at our internal Google calendar for interesting events.
